The Littlehampton Academy, West Sussex
Permanent with Balfour Beatty
Oct 2010 - March 2013
Senior Engineer on the complete redevelopment of the Littlehampton Academy. Basically was build another school on the playing field then demolish the old. This project involved construction of 400m access road, then 3 no 3 storey RC frame blocks joined at a central atrium with a steel frame sports fastened on the side. There were a couple of existing blocks that we refurbished, then the rest was demolished and their sports pitches put back where the original buildings were. The whole project was worth £33m. Here I was project engineer for Balfours which basically meant that i ensured each subcontractors works were correct, so i was doing all the drainage inspections, pre pour inspections, surveying of formation levels, surface make ups, re bar checks, quantifying works, etc. I was also underground service coordinator which was a real pain. I saw this project from day 1, carrying out surveys before we started, quantifying and setting out 2000m of hoarding through access road and car park construction, pile mat, piling, drainage, pile caps, ground floor slabs, then onto the concrete frames, roofing, setting out all internal walls, m&e works, sports pitches then demolition of the old school buildings, creating the sports pitches and car park realignment works. I covered everything.
The Sir Robert Woodard Academy, Lancing, West Sussex
March 2010-Oct 2010

This was the redevelopment of the Boundstone school into the SRWA. Again as before, build a new school on the playing fields then demolish the existing. I was involved from site hoarding, topsoil strip, groundworks, drainage and ground floor slab. Then through the concrete frames. These were 6 blocks, 2 storeys with concrete rooves with a steel frame that joined them together in a central hub with steel frame sports hall on the side. I was mainly checking here and as built mailbox as the groundworker (KnightBuild), RC frames ( MJ Gallagher) & the steelwork erector each had their own engineer and i collated all their as builts. If i am honest I got pushed into this job, I am not really a senior engineer, but i had just had 36 weeks with Willmott Dixon building pretty much the same thing. The remuneration i was looking for meant that they couldnt employ me as a site engineer so i was titled senior engineer but mostly doing a main contractors' engineer job.
